1938: Apocalyptic childhoods

This project plays with a range of family photographs - particularly an image of my father sleeping that was taken - I estimate - in 1938 when he was about 10. When I began to make art in response to this image - pairing it with newspaper imagery from 1938 - it seemed like his world then and my world now were poised at a similar apocalyptic moment. His world was heading towards world war and for me, the early days of Russia’s threats toward Ukraine and the resonance of COVID made our times seem equally fraught.

The prints are photogravure etchings with chin colle coloured elements
